K-12 Outreach and Education

Through authentic experiences and inspiring learning opportunities, the SEL K-12 outreach and education program aims to help students see their future selves in STEM roles by driving interest and self-efficacy. The K-12 program also works to support teachers and curriculum. SEL employees are enthusiastic about this program as well and often volunteer their time to visit classrooms, help with robotics competitions, and more.

SEL and the Palouse Discovery Science Center: A Partnership With Real Chemistry

SEL is committed to helping develop tomorrow’s innovators and inventors. So it was natural for the company to lend its support to the Palouse Discovery Science Center (PDSC). The PDSC is a nonprofit organization in Pullman, Washington, that encourages creativity and provides hands-on science and learning experiences for children of all ages.The partnership began in 2002 when SEL donated an 11,000-square-foot building in the Port of Whitman County to house the PDSC’s interactive exhibits, educational programs, and teaching collections.SEL founder Dr. Edmund O. Schweitzer, III, believes that the PDSC plays an important role in stimulating creativity and developing a lifelong love of learning.“Understanding science is much more than lessons in biology, chemistry, and physics,” he said. “It’s about experiencing the flow in discovery and creativity. The PDSC does a great job of making learning fun!”The strong ties between the two organizations have continued to grow over the years. SEL has not only continued to support the PDSC financially, but also extends support through volunteer collaboration and board leadership.

Addressing Community Hunger

SEL understands that many people around the globe are at risk of hunger, which is why we are honored to support organizations working to make food readily available for their communities. We do this through partnering with nonprofit organizations around the world. With their expertise, we can do our part to help provide food access for people living in poverty.  “One of our values at SEL is to support our community,” said SEL CEO Dave Whitehead. “Organizations that provide healthy and nutritious food to those in need really touch our hearts at SEL.”Some of the programs we support provide food access for rural communities, weekend food sources for school-aged children, and senior meal sites. Our employees also support this effort by organizing food drives volunteering at local foodbanks in their communities. In 2023, SEL employees personally donated enough to provide over 36,900 meals to those in need around the world.Learn about Pullman’s Community Action Center and their work to address hunger for residents throughout Whitman County.

Partnering With Corporate Angel Network to Provide Free Air Transportation for Cancer Patients

Corporate Angel Network helps cancer patients access the best treatment available by arranging free travel on corporate aircraft. This service not only provides patients with specialized treatment but also reduces their emotional stress, physical discomfort, and financial burden. Since joining the network in 2003, SEL has been honored to fly dozens of patients and their families to and from treatment facilities.
