Fault and Load Transmitter and Receiver System

The SEL-FLT and SEL-FLR Fault and Load Transmitter and Receiver System improves the overall reliability of your distribution system through accurate fault indication and load monitoring. The system enables you to locate faults faster and make informed switching decisions. Restoring power quickly is essential to ensuring satisfied customers and better CAIDI reliability metrics. Locating momentary faults allows you to address system issues and improve MAIFI metrics. Highly accurate (1% typical) load data also enables phase balancing and system planning.

The SEL-FLT Fault and Load Transmitter and the SEL-FLR Fault and Load Receiver work in combination using unlicensed 900 MHz wireless communications with a range of 10 miles. Line powering, with as little as 3.5 A continuous current, reduces ongoing maintenance and allows you to use the SEL-FLT throughout your distribution system. SEL-FLR Receivers are easy to integrate into existing systems with DNP3/IP output and comprehensive security.

Improve Fault Location Throughout the Distribution System—Adding the SEL-FLT and SEL-FLR System provides more detail for momentary and permanent fault location on feeders, taps, and laterals to provide a more granular and extended view of the distribution system. With centralized fault information from the SEL-FLT and SEL-FLR System, utility operations teams can dispatch crews to more precise locations, speeding up restoration. Bright LEDs on the SEL-FLT provide local identification for line crews confirming the fault indication reported through the SCADA system or outage management system (OMS).

Use Load Data to Improve Operations—Highly accurate (1% typical) and timely load data (as fast as 5-minute intervals) from SEL-FLT Transmitters on feeders, taps, and laterals enables better decision-making in emergency switching situations. Load data is also essential for phase balancing, system planning, and identifying potential power theft.

SEL-FLT Transmitters can be installed with a single hotstick. Using standard DNP3/IP output, SEL-FLR Receivers integrate easily into Ethernet networks. All configuration and troubleshooting for the SEL-FLT and SEL-FLR System is performed through the SEL-FLR easy-to-use web interface.

Trust the Strong Built-In Security
Wireless communications are protected with 128-bit encryption as well as message and device authentication. Users are authorized using role-based access, and unused Ethernet ports can be locked down. If security events occur, the SEL-FLR logs all events locally and can send alerts to syslog destinations.

Develop a Deployment Plan With a Wireless Area Coverage Study
SEL provides a wireless path study for the planned use of an SEL-FLT and SEL-FLR System. Customers provide information for the SEL-FLR and SEL-FLT locations, and the study estimates the viability of the wireless links. SEL offers a free study for up to 5 SEL-FLT Transmitters and offers complete system path studies for a fee through SEL Engineering Services.
